How to Stay Safe While Waiting for a Tow Truck

Waiting for a tow truck can feel stressful, especially if your vehicle has broken down on a busy road, at night, in bad weather or somewhere unfamiliar. The most important thing is to stay calm, avoid unnecessary risks and keep yourself well clear of traffic.

If your vehicle is still moving and it is safe to do so, pull over as far away from the road as possible. Look for a wide shoulder, side street, car park, service station or another safe area. Turn on your hazard lights straight away so other drivers can see you.

Once stopped, think carefully before getting out. If you are on a busy road or highway, it may be safer to stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on until help arrives. If you do leave the vehicle, exit on the side away from traffic and move to a safe location well away from the road.

Avoid standing behind, in front of or beside your vehicle while waiting. Other drivers may not see you clearly, especially at night, in heavy rain or around bends. Do not attempt roadside repairs unless the vehicle is in a genuinely safe location.

When calling for towing support, provide your exact location, vehicle type, what has happened and where you need the vehicle taken. Sharing a GPS pin from your phone can also help the tow truck operator find you faster.
